Does anyone know what this part is/does?

Hi all. This is from my 82 300SD. I have no idea (newbie here) what this part with the metal accordion type hose attached is. It seems to have an unused vacuum port and I also have no idea where the line for that port would lead. I appreciate any help.

Mainly I'm just curious and always get concerned when I see what looks like a place where a vacuum hose should be... but there's no vacuum hose connected. Should there be a hose connected to it and if so where would it lead? Do you know any issues that would arise from that vacuum port having no hose connected? I appreciate your help and info.

The device is not functioning well---I know your old and on a fixed income, but if you don't have the vacuum line diagram, you have exceeded your limitations---search the web for the diagram for your specific engine or seek professional help!!

Ummm... old and on a a fixed income? You've got the wrong guy in mind. And I'm not sure what you mean by "the device is not working well" but I'll get the part's function figured out.

W126 service manual, under engine or exhaust you will find the vacuum diagram.

Used a pc to see it, won't work in the phone

Good luck

The EGR valve is working perfectly on your engine. You just need to remove the vacuum components in the black box on the valve cover and plug the vacuum ports they connect to so the vacuum system will work properly.

However, for the engine to run most cleanly and efficiently, you will need to retrofit the correct intake and exhaust manifolds so the turbo side of the engine looks something like the attached image.
