Transmission questions for an 84 500 SEL

I have only had this car for a few months, so I don’t know if the characteristics of my transmission are normal. Comments would be appreciated…

1. There is a 1 to 2 second delay when you shift from park to reverse or drive. Is this normal?

2. The car seems to shift smoothly when under hard acceleration, but shifts from second to third, and third to fourth under normal or loafing acceleration have a hard “bump” feel and noise. Downshifts are also noticeable.

3. The transmission always starts in 2nd gear – which from my searching of other threads seems to be the way it should work. Is this correct?

Thanks

Have your transmission serviced. I noticed a descerable difference in smoothness after the service.

1-2 delay in engagement is ok, as long as the trans doesn't slip its ok basically. Although, noises are not normal. Please explain what kind of noises are you experiencing? Firm shifts are the norm, and it does start in 2nd gear.

You can engage 1st by putting the shifter to the B position or just floor it from a standing start.

Thanks. How much should I expect to pay for a transmision service -- and what should it include?

The noise is a result of the FIRM shift. I guess I will learn more from the service

Thanks again.

The service should include new fluid and filter with any minor adjustments. Should cost less than $100 at any good Indy.
