I had his same issue ith my (Australian Delivery) 1984 280SE (126) so first diagnosed using common sense....i.e. checked leads, plugs, distributor, rotor, cap, coil, fuel pump ec bu hen I came up without an answer, I realized i had to be the fuel pump relay.
The pump worked fine when "jumped" directly from a battery but was only getting limited or no power when connected to the rest of the system.
They're not a super expensive part... about USD$75 I'd say. I'm not sure about Gen 2 but the Gen 1 part number is 0001 545 4305
