560sel makes terrible brief metallic squeal/scratch/grinding sound when starting
I have a 1990 560sel with 113K miles on it. Car runs beautifully and has been serviced by the local dealership. I while back it died and I knew it was the alternator. Long story short we ended up putting in 2 different Bosch alternators - 3 in total ended up being defective. Everything drives fine except for when I start the car. It makes a very brief but loud and terrible noise if I hold the key in the start position too long. It is absurdly sensitive, and even if I do it lightening fast it still makes a shorter/quieter version of the sound. I still think this ties to the alternator. But I don't want to take it back in until I have some more ideas of what it could be. I have the A/C off when starting.
