Orphaned wire

I was working on an unrelated problem and came across this orphaned wire coming out of the firewall behind and below the battery of my 1987 560SEL. Everything on the car seems to be in working order, any ideas what this might be?
Thanks!

That looks a great deal like part of the wiring loom for an aftermarket Security System/Immobiliser to me.
If that's an inline fuse holder (black thing) then it could also be someone wanted to run the stereo when the car is off and decided to go about it the hard way but either way, did you follow it through on the other side of the firewall to see where it went?
I wouldn't worry too much about it but try follow it through under the dash the next time you are tinkering with something inside the dash to see where it leads.
It certainly doesn't resemble part of a Mercedes OE loom to me.
