WHICH RELAY CONTROLS THE STARTER?

On my 83 300SD it just clicks when I try to start the car. It started doing this rarely, but has gotten worse until it will not start at all. From looking at what wiring diagrams I have found, the starter is controlled by the glow plug relay. I would like to have this verified before I buy a new relay,
Thanks for any help.

Are you sure it isn't something else like the starter lockout switch on the transmission? What kind of diagnostics have you done on the starter, ignition switch, battery, and lockout switch?

The battery is good, The trans neutral safety switch is new as well as the starter and solenoid. I replaced the glow plug solenoid which did not change anything. I just went out and tried to start it again, when the key is turned on the lights on, the instrument panel lights that should come on, don't. When the key is turned to start, with the head lights on, there is a click but the head lights do not dim. This, to me, would indicate it is not the starter being jammed it would indicate the ignition switch being bad.
Do you agree?
Thanks;
Steve

If the headlights don't dim, there is no current being consumed by the something other than the headlights. The assumption is the starting circuit is not being energized.

You said you have replaced some parts. What measurements have you done with a digital voltmeter? You need to confirm voltage and continuity at various locations. You need to verify that 12V is getting to the starter. It isn't clear to me from your posts whether or not you have done that.

I have not. But I will this A M.

I went out to check if voltage was getting to the starter. I, as usual, tried to start the car, and low and behold, it started!!!
So I am back to an i=13pxntermittent problem..

Went out to shut the car off, and of course, tried to start it again. This time back to no dash lights and just a click. I reached under the dash to jiggle the plug in the back of the ignition switch and came out with a hand covered with oil. Next is to trace vacuum line back to see where the oil is coming from.

Found the problem, (I hope). There is a vacuum leal in the fuel shutoff valve which is sucking oil/fuel into the ignition switch.
Thanks for the help.
