1990 420SEL power seat and telescopic steering

Hello everyone,

I just posted my introduction and hope it was posted on right spot/ section.

I recently got myself a W126 and cleaning it up one by one. It is a 1990 420SEL with 280,000 kms, runs good stops and shifts good too. Have few issues but the most critical I need to address is the driver seat and power telescopic steering wheel are acting up.

When I open driver's door, I get no dome light, no puddle light and even power seat does not energize, however with left front door opened, I get dome light, puddle light (on both front doors) and passenger seat energized. I have read here that there is a relay in the left footwell that controls safety warning and shares ground with driver's door switch, would be replacing it soon.

Main issue with drivers seat and telescopic steering
as soon as I start the car, driver's seat back starts to recline back on its own, when adjusted forward, it starts to come back and does not stop until any seat adjustment button is pressed/moved. Then steering wheel starts to come up and does not stop, I move the steering down, it starts to go but then seat back starts to go back. I am struggling to figure out issue.
  • Does failed safety relay got anything to do with it?
  • Is it likely faulty seat memory module or switch in the door?
  • Can I disconnect memory connector on the door switch to stop it for the interim?

Other related to seat
Driver's seat heating does not work though seat heating switch turn on with ONE and TWO led lights but no heat in seat.

I did try search function but could not find any related posts to memory function, would appreciate help.
Thanks,

I would try unplugging the seat memory connector and see if you can then move the seat and steering wheel and see if they hold.

Seat heating element inside the seat may be damaged and/or wiring from switch the heating element may be damaged. Unfortunately you know these cars are old and wiring problems will crop up. Wish there was an easier way to diagnose the problem but you will have to tear a few things down in order to track down the problem areas.
