How good is the W126?

I'm used to the W220, but I'm curious about the W126.

I saw some youtube reviews (one in particular linked below) and I'm intrigued. Every generation of S-Class is good. The W220 I have is fantastic, with the usual caveat of: once you've taken care of all the crap.
I've never considered the older Mercedes Benz's, but researching them I have this inescapable conclusion: Mercedes has always been insane.

Anyway, who here has one up to good spec. How do tehy stack up to newer cars today? How bad is the maintenance?

Awesome cars

I have 2, 1985 300SD and 1990 300SE. Both are great. The 1990 I've had for almost 12 years and the 1985 for about 5 years. The 1990 needed a transmission and the 1985 the trap oxidizer removed. Other than that, I haven't had any major problems, just the usual wear items. I replaced all the suspension bushings and suspension springs on the '90 and lower control arm bushings on the '85. Water pump on both, major tune up on the gasser, I personally rebuilt the injectors on the diesel and replace the gassers injectors. Tires and brakes, new rotors all around, replaced the oe wheels with newer Mercedes wheels. All in all, I love my W126's. I just bought a W210 wagon because I wanted something newer.
