How can you tell if the car was a Euro car or a US market car?
The vin # is 12603612001173*

GREAT CAR you got there man ! mines a 1980 500 SE Euro and your's is deffenitly euro ! so you and me are practicly buddies
hahaha well hey this is what i have got done to my car and i get around 20.8 miles to the gallon ! * i drive a lil crazy once in awhile.
I got the platnum 4+ spal plugs expensive but their worth it ! u feel the diff's!
I got the K&N Fileter for the Air housing
I have to get the K&N filter for oil filter and tranny !
Also i got some restore engine compression thing from kragen (ill get the correct name for you) that seem to work a bit
And i got my frequency valve disconnected!
and now im enjoing my almost 21mpg!
I have a post somewhere else in this forum that has a link to a tornato device that gives more air to ur engine and suppose to give you better gas mileage and more hp, when i get some money ima try it ot ! but those are my suggestions!
nice car you have there ! read some of my post and you will figure out what this beast can do for you and what YOU can do for this beast

Does it require premium gas to be used to prevent damage?
My 90 300SE states premium is required but I have used 87 for the last 100K and the car has 235K on it now with no ill effects.

I would recommend premium gas for it since I don't know if it is equipped with a knock sensor. I put premium gas in my '84 500SEL. Your 1990 300SE has a knock sensor so putting lower octane gasoline in it won't harm it. Just that you won't be getting all the power it has out of it.
In stock form, expect 12mpg/city and 16mpg/highway from your 500SEL. Those machines are heavy, powerful, gas guzzling beasts!! The engines were never designed for optimum fuel efficiency.
