Question What are ABS sensors?

I have a 1985 500 sec, and the mechanic says i need new ABS sensors in the front and rear. Could anyone tell me what they do and where they are located. Also, are they neccesary to drive the car, and how hard are they to replace?

Thanks a bunch

The ABS sensors measure the speed of the wheels for the Anti-Lock Brake system. You don't need them to drive the car, but you need them for the ABS to function. In the front they are on both wheels behind the wheel hub. The rear sensor is in the differential, and is easy to replace. The front ones might be a little tough. They are also expensive (or at least "pricey").
