How to make motor run warmer (heater issue)

During the winter months here in Illinios, the motor on my 89 420SEL (gas) never really warms up - at least according to the temperature gauge, the needle barely moves from the bottom of the gauge.

The result is that the heater blows almost no warm air - but it's not a problem with the heater or a fuse because when the weather is a little warmer the temperature gauge needle goes up to about mid-level and the heater blows nice, hot air.

Can't find a reference to installing a warmer thermostat like my old Mustangs. Does anyone know if this is what needs to be done, or should I attempt to do something more caveman-esque like covering the grill like Semi-Trucks do?

Make sure your existing thermostat works.

Replace your thermostat ASAP.. Driving your car around that cold all the time is causing huge amounts of excess wear, poor fuel economy and ruining your oil in short order.

While you are at it, flush the system and refill w/ Mercedes coolant, it really does make a difference.
