Well, yeah, you better be thankful that you don't have that crazy rear suspension. Right now it is the only headache in my head due to that car - I'm going to spend no less than $300 on parts along to get it back to working condition!!

Your analogy on the assignment of model years and actual date/year of manufacture is correct in some cases, however your car is definitely a Euro based on the VIN number.

So there you go, you've got the monster power output and 12 mpg!! How long have you had yours? How many miles?

Euro eh?...That's good to know. What monster output am I looking for again? The U.S. version is 184hp or something to that effect right?

I've had the car since this summer and have put on about 4,000 miles on it. Currently it says 185,000 and change....I'm definitely impressed with it's longevity and quality. It rides like a 1 or 2 year old car and not a 20 year old with such high mileage. No shakes or rattles and while it does have a few quirks and things that need to be attended to it is very bank-vault like indeed.

As for the gas mileage, is it really that bad? Am I really looking at 12mpg? My 350 in an old '61 Chev that I have isn't even as bad. Over Christmas I took a trip up to Canada (800 or so miles one way) in the Benz and I think it cost me around $65-80 in gas (one way) at the current premium gas prices (I'd say an average of $2.00/gallon). Haven;t worked out the mpg on that but I wasn't too happy about it since it was over double to what I used to pay for the same trip in my Honda.

US Spec is 184hp and 247 ft-lbs of torque.

Euro Spec is 238hp and 299 ft-lbs of torque. I haven't yet timed the performance of my Euro 500SEL, but I believe 0-60mph can be done in 7 seconds or less.

12mpg is about the best you can get in city driving, and 18mpg is the best you can get in highway driving. Your 350 Chevy engine wasn't subjected to the strict emissions requirements that the M-B engine was subjected to, since those requirements weren't in place back then. That's why it MAY be getting better gas mileage. Furthermore, the M-B engine was made just after those emissions requirements went into effect, so then M-B and other manufacturers hadn't yet mastered means of producing great output from their engines while meeting the emissions requirements AND obtaining reasonable fuel economy. They have since mastered that though. I mean, the new Covette has a 6.0L pushrod V8 with 400hp and 400ft-lbs of torque and gets 19 mpg/city and 28/hwy!!

Agreed.

Plus my Chev is a stick while the Benz is auto and believe it or not the Benz outweighs the Detroit iron by several hundred pounds!

It's a 4 door Impala. Mind you it's a plain-Jane model with very few options. Three-on-the-tree, no pw, no air, etc.....but still I was pleasantly surprised that the Benz is so much more massive.

Very nice. I should have painted mine that color but I always wanted a white Benz. I think I will paint my 1966 230 S that color though. Nice Car.
