How do I fix a broken hood hinge on 85 300SD?

I opened the hood on my 300SD yesterday and I found that the pin on which the hood mechanism pivots (on the driver's side) was broken in two. The pin passes through a bracket riveted to the fender well and through an L-shaped arm attached to the hood. The pin broke right between the arm and the bracket. I looked at the other side and saw that there is a hex-head bolt in place of the pin on that side.

Is this a common problem on these cars?
How do I access that back side of the bracket, so I can put a nut on a bolt?

Thanks,
RayG

I Think you have to remove the front fender.

Figured it out

I fixed it over the weekend. I found that after I removed the plastic skirt inside the fender well piece on the driver's side and then removed what looked like a vacuum reservoir (???), I could reach up to get at the nuts that hold the hinge bracket in place. Drilling out the broken halves of the pin was the biggest headache. The awkard shape of the bracket made it hold down securely. Anyway, it's back together with a bolt in place of the pin.

Thanks for the reply,
RayG
