'95 S320-trans doesn't initially shift to 3rd

I would like to see if anyone has ever had or heard of a MB trans that doesn't shift 2nd to 3rd for the first few hundred feet (Never more than the length of my street). It has been doing this for about a year now. Even if I push the RPMs it will not shift. I found that it was actually shifting sooner in the winter. Now that it is getting warm again, the shifting is once again taking longer. Once it makes it to 3rd the first time it will shift perfectly fine until the car is shut off.

The only thing that I can contribute it to is that a new crate engine was put in around 85K and it started soon after. When the car passed 100K I had the usual trans service but it had no effect. Even the MB service manager tells me it is unusual (And would like me to replace it). They checked and replaced a bunch of sensors with no effect and I am tired of paying them to guess.

I am now at 110K and figure as long as MB service says to replace it anyway, I will use it until shifting gets unbearable or stops completely.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

benz purposely does that in order to warm up the motor and tranny so it holds the shifts longer while warming up the car. I hear tranny fluid can help that though. I will be switiching over to Redline ATF D4 soon and hopefully that will fix alot of the problems.

Thanks. I have heard that.

However, mine acts contrary to that because it doesn't do it when below 30 degrees and worse as the temperature goes up. I have been told that the longer shift is limited to first gear. Also my trans won't shift verses a longer shift.

What puzzles me the most is that it never did it before the engine change.

Smile s320 trans

Engine communicates with trans through vaccume line in which controls the shifts. So engine should be checked and recalibrated first prior to any trans works. I would suggest go to alldatadiy.com and subscribe it with your car model if you don't have one now . It cost only twenty somthing dollars for one year. You can access to all mb factory service bulletin and repair instruction. Really helpful. You can save thousands on wrong repair works or diy works. Good luck!
