shift knobs???
hey guys,
I want a new shift knob for my car but most shift knobs say "95-2000", or "only for 95+". What is different about the shift selecter that only allows later model benzes to use shiftknobs? can i put one of those on my 93 300SE?

I was actually looking to get one for my car as well, but since it's a 92 I seem to have the same problem. I'm not entirely sure, but from what I have found, I think all the shift knobs from 92 - 94 all have the shaft assembled as part of the knob itself (check the pic).
Everything 95+ was built where it can actually 'screw off' the top like a cap. If you were looking for shift knobs though for your year check out the following website.

They have a few for the year of our vehicle. Just follow the links at the side of the page under "parts for" (mercedes->shift knobs->140)
Hope this helps!

Unfortuantely, that's where my expertise ends. You know what though, I would just call your mechanic and see what they say would be involved in the mod.
I'm actually interested in changing the guage panel as well as the shifter. Found a company that actually sells Burlwood guage panel, and think that it may not look to bad compared to the stock black. Either that or the silver ring trim that would go around the speedometer, time, etc.

There are two types of shift knobs for these cars, 92-95 early and 95 late - 99. The later type can be retrofitted onto the earlier cars so you can use the newer bayonet type shift knobs. I don't have the part number for the new shifter shaft handy but will post it later this week. This part is about $20 from the dealer if I remember correctly.

i wanted to do the same thing on my 94 S420 and was told by the dealer that on that year car the shift knob is a part of the shifter itself and it is not possible to change without extensive mods.
in the newer models their is a clip at the bottom of the knob that will allow you to remove it.

Oops, I forgot to tell you that the dealer parts guy will likely tell you that you can't do this. They are wrong. I will post the part number and a picture tomorrow.

Hey, you think if enough of us were interested say 5 - 10 of us, that maybe the company would allow for a group buy? Just by the looks of it, there seem to be at least three of us who want to do this so far....
Just thought I would throw that out there, but let me know what you think. If enough people actually want to do it, maybe it something that can be organized

OK, here are some pics, one of the new shift lever and an illustration showing its assembly. I have not done this conversion on my 140 yet, but did on the 1990 R129 I owned. Part number for the shift lever is 140 326 05 01.
