Loud spring-like Noise when Steering Crackling
Merecedes S320 1995 Right hand drive (UK)
Hey whats happening guys, hope you all are enjoying your summer wherever you are!
Ive got this annoying problem.
When rotating the steering wheel more than just a small degree, I hear this noise. It sounds like a spring is being stretched a little too far and then released. It sounds a little like when you release the PARK brake in the Merc. It has nothing to do with the Park brake though.
Under the drivers side (right-hand side, in UK) I feel something is rattling underneath the floor. It can be felt in any area of the floor, not necessarily nearer to the seat or the pedals. It does not feel right at all. The noise is getting louder and more frequent. Its driving me nuts!!!!
The other noise is that there is a crackling noise from underneath the car when I am at idle and below around 800rpm. It comes and goes and when I came back last night it was so loud when I was backing up into my drive at home. The only thing I can think of is that the catalytic converter has something to do with it! But everyone knows how much they cost. I need to be sure!!!
These cars are nothing but maintenance but its worth it when you can figure out what and how to fix a problem!
I sincerely thank you all and I am sure one or two of you out there has had this problem at some point and I hope you can share this with me and us all.
