bad license plate lights..

bad license plate lights..
my license plate lights went out a couple days ago. i opened it up and found the right side to be burnt out.
went ahead and replaced it and everything was working fine. 8 hours later, the lights go out again. this time it was the left side.
so i go ahead and replace that one, but this time the lights don't work correctly.
for some odd reason they will only light up when the trunk is position half way between closed and fully open. any other position and it turns off.
i have check the fuse for the license plate and it is fine.
what could my problem be?
