Improved cooling mods for our W140's, Ideas?....
hey guys.
I have E36 M3 and a common mod on those cars was to get a lower electric fan switch and lower thermostat to help keep the temps power. it did wonders on my M3 (its called the fan-delete mod where cooling was improved so much you could remove the fan and get extra few HP and still have no negative effects). In AZ right now its 105-115 degrees in the day and its just really causing cooling havoc, my cooling reservoir overflowed twice (through its overflow tube). I later found out that bad coolant mixture was to blame as well as low coolant level (even when coolant warning light off).
Does anyone know the different Temperature Thermostats used in both the 6cyls and the 8cyls? usually 8 degrees lower is a good amount. also where u can u get lower electric fan switch. I know some benz V8 guy has a website where he made the special fan switches.
anyways I also used Water Wetter made by redline oils to help lower the temps and it did help a bit (a few degrees cooler but still too hot for my tastes).
any help is appreciated.

well I saw no real results when I added two things of water wetter; however If you use a 50/50 water/water wetter it should keep it at 200F at least those are water wetter numbers, it gets hot in cali too summers are easily 110 or 115 and nights do not get too cold 40-45 35 maybe nothing that would freeze so antifreeze is not needed here maybe not in az either might want to flush and try this new combo

naw watter wetter plus water only is for race. optimum summer mixture is actually 80% water 20% anti-freeze which is about what im at now plus water wetter. But what im trying to find out is the Different models of thermostats, there are usually multiple degree thermostats and they are all same size so they are swappable. if i can get a lower thermostat and lower thermostat switch, that would do wonders. I'm looking at possible ratidator upgrades (to aluminum instead of these damn german plastic radiators). Anyone know what stock thermostat temps are or anything of the sort? sucks theres no bentley manual for benzes.

hey guys, after doing research i found out V8 thermostat is 80 degrees where as 320 and 600 thermostat is 87 degrees so I will be doing the 80 degree thermostat swap on my car for improved cooling characteristics. V8 guys... sorry but theres no lower thermostat than 80.

Omey, I'm in AZ too, Tempe. My 1995 S420 never boils over and the temp never gets above 110C. My mechanic buddy ( I do most of my own work and let him do the really tough stuff ) says that the Benz folks have found that perfect lubrication in these engines only occurs above 100C. It sounds to me like you still have some diagnosis to do before you tinker with temp lowering mods. I had a 1990 500SL that ran pretty hot. I pulled the heads, replaced the leaking head gasket (external leak), the radiator, water pump and thermostat. Fan clutch was fine. Never a problem after that, no matter how hard I pushed it in the heat. Good luck to you!

hey guys, finally put some fresh coolant and another bottle of water wetter and it seems to have solved the problem, it never goes above 89-90 degrees anymore so i guess the combo works, and it also has not spilled off anymore. a lower thermostat will definately help so that it takes alot of the load off the electrical fans. I will do both the lower thermostat and the lower fan switch (thats what us BMW owners do on the M3 for the "fan delete" mod). I may not do the fan delete until weather gets cooler but it would be interesting to see what happens.
