I don't want to be curt but if you can't afford $2k for a rebuilt trans you shouldn't be driving a W140.
Describe the problem further, what does the trans fluid look like?

There is a transmission attached to the wiper motor and unfortunately it is not common in the aftermarket. Typically a motor replacement is all that is needed and they run $550 in the aftermarket. $1000 for the transmission does not seem out of line.
This is not the driveline transmission correct?

You probably have the stripped gear problem. See the link. Looks like some have had a new gear fabricated for $40 or so.

Soperk,
Here is the pic of the part you mentioned. For your car ('95 US S420), the part number is:
140 820 04 07 (Part 17 in the diagram below)
Brett's idea sounds like a good one to me, disassemble the unit and find out which gear or gears are broken. It if is too expensive to have new gears made, try to find one from a wrecked unit.

I doubt it, they are completely different part numbers and the 300E uses the single wiper design, different from the two-wiper design of the 140. If the price is right, it might be worth a go, but I wouldn't pay more than $10 for it...
