S500 Coupe - Grill & Headlight questions!!

Hey,

Havent really posted much so im sure none of you will remember me (https://mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=109032), i had a s500 coupe that was in bad shape, its now completely fixed up and restored, i just need to sort out the headlights. I want to know how easy is it to change the headlights? is it a diy job? or do i have to take it to the shop? I need to change them from the Middle East specs (which is the same as america i think) to UK spec. Usually you can do this with those little stickers on the headlights but i think that just makes the front look really really ugly!

Other than that, i need a new grill for it, as my one is damaged and i want to paint it black. Anyone else done this? This cars nearly ready its been almost 7 months in the garage.. so you can imagine the amount of vaseline i needed when i got the bill! Anyway any help is appreciated greatly!

open bonnet..

remove phillips headed screw in the side of the headlight, holding the under light trim on.

remove 8mm headed screw on the inner side of the wing / top corner of the headlight. note that this is the shortest of the three

remove 8mm headed screw in the side of the light nearest the radiator. this is a mid-length screw.

remove the rubber trim. it just pops off. the bottom corner is held in with a thin rubber 'arrow'. it may pay to use a little water / fairy liquid to help this slip out.

un pop the rubber to this level.

pull off the cap of the headlight wiper, as mine had the squirter built in, it was quite stiff. undo nut and remove wiper arm.

now the under light trim can be rotated round and unclipped from the wing.

under the headlight is another 8mm screw - this is the longest. be careful not to drop it!

the headlight is now loose and can be pulled out. I didn't undo any of the wires or vac pipes.

under the lens is a clip to hold the rubber onto the end of the lens. dont lose it.

the lens is held onto the back with several clips.

un-pop these with a screwdriver - i used three different sizes. BE CAREFUL!!! or this will happen.

work your way round unclipping and tweaking the lens off.

remove lens, and swap for new one. There was a small captive metal componet - not sure what it did - spacer? on one of the screw holes on my lens, so I swapped it over to the new one.

carefully work your way round the clips pressing the lens back in place.

replace rubber strip, noting the hooks / blobs to locate it

on the right hand side and begin at the top, but stop at this point

do the long screw up under the light.

clip the under light trim back on.

finish rubber strip

then do the screw up holding the trim in place.

do all the rest of the screws up.

job done!

Thanks to graham for hosting the pics for me! heres a silly dancing banana thing :bannana:
