Window Tinting

Guy's, I'd like to tint the windows on my 1997 S500 Coupe but I'm concerned about the saftey aspect of it with the self dimming mirrors. Anyone care to give their perspective having tinted windows and self dimming mirrors.

The tint will be safe as long as you don't go below 20%. Anything below, you may never see that mirror on the first look. I have 35% on my windows and it doesnt feel like I have tint. I will be upgrading to 20%. My suburban has 5% on all windows and at night you can't see a thing especially knowing that the truck comes with 20% factory tint. Real danger. Also check the tint laws in your state. You dont want to be pulled over for that.

I have 35% on my windows and have no problems with the self dimming function. I imagine that the self-dimming function is set to respond to various brightnesses of light so, really, it should not matter. If the light coming in the rear window is diffused by the tint, the mirror will just dim less. Right?

35% will not be noticeable simply because you can see through it without any problem. Go 15 or less and you will have visual problems at night. Even a slight dip in the mirror will cause you to not see an image(reflection) on it. Also there is no such thing as less dipping. When light hits the light diode on the mirror, it causes it to change the angle in which you look at it. The second angle is darker and thats why the image gets darker. The second angle has a dark coated gel that is activated by light hitting the diode.

Also tint has metalic coating on them. The darker the tint the more coating in has and if you have your radio antenna laminated in your rear window, the metal in the tint will cause reception problems unless you get ceramic tint.

Actually, there is no dipping at all. The mirror uses a photochromatic process to automatically dim the mirror, it does not move. The photoreceptor on the mirror automatically adjusts the level of dimming.

The mirror compares the input from the photo cell at the front and the back, the diifferece causes change. Tinting the back window will allow less light to come in.
