HELP! 1992 W140 400SEL automatic transmission fluid mixed with engine oil
Dear all,
My 400SEL won't go as I step on the gas padal while the RPM goes up. I find the automatic transmission fluid is far below the minimum mark. After refilling 2 litres ATF, it runs very smooth for a few days. I check the ATF level again and it drops below the minimum level as before. I don't know where the leak is as I find no ATF on the ground. Then I check the engine oil level and it rises much and pass the upper limit. It happened a few times that when I started my car, there was a lot of white smoke came out from the exhaust pipe. Could it be engine oil overflow?
I am sure I refill ATF at the right place (the red cap with a long hose near the back of the engine). Is it possible that the ATF went into the engine and mixed with engine oil? How to fix this problem? Please give me some advice. Thanks.
Albert

I cant see how this is possible. tranny fluid goes in the transmission and the cooler in the radiator only, no other places.
Edit: actually it sounds like your torque converter is going.

Possibly you have a bad diaphram in your modulator valve which would cause the vacuum to suck out the ATF. Pull the vacuum line and see if there is ATF in it. If there is you need a new modulator valve.

Thanks, rhgtara. It is the diaphram in the modulator valve. My garage fixed it, even though the labour cost is not cheap. My W140 is running great now. Thanks all.
