I think the '98 is the same as my '92

Set the parking brake.

Put the car in N or D - don't have the engine running for this - key does need to move to the ON position and you'll have to step on the brake pedal.

Press down on the shifter and turn to the left (I think) - you'll need to rotate it about 45 degrees - it can then be lifted up.

If you get the shifter handle first, you'll see how it's retained in the mechanism - there's a pin through the shaft that is the retainer. It slides down into a channel and pressing down and turning locks it into place.

There were a few different styles, the bayonet (push and twist) and the lock nut. The bayonet style has created some issues, some people have pushed, twisted and broken the casting in the shift housing!

Initially, I wasn't able to push or twist anything on mine. Ended up taking out the snap ring that holds the alignment collar into the mechanism and coaxing the pieces apart.

There was a lot of dirt, etc in the shifter due to the gate flapper gizmo being AWOL, and that created some amount of corrosion in the mechanism.

I'm sure if I had forced it, I would have broken something. It took a lot of cleaning to get everthing to go back together happily.
