'96 S500C electical/electronic problems.

Good thing i found this forum, I think I'm going to need it.

First off, just purchased a '96 S500 Coupe, while driving it away from the previous owner's house, i had noticed that the ASR/ABS/ESP was not functioning (not to mention the rear leveling). I thought this might have been a fluke and attempted to turn off and re-start the car. Upon re-starting it, the engine ran like utter garbage. The idle surged, it backfired and the EPC light came on the dashboard. If it was left to sit until it cooled off, it ran fine. The previous owner agreed to cover that replacement of the ($1900!) throttle body by the dealer. The dealer also had diagnosed that a faulty ABS pump was causing some of the other issues (I'm not sure exactly which ones).

Does anyone know exactly what systems the ABS pump effects. I'm guessing at least the ABS (obviously) and the electronic stability program. Also, is there common failures for the rear suspension?

And the strange thing is that while driving the car, NONE of the warning lights come on in the instrument cluster, aside from the EPC light after a warm restart.

Yea the self leveling suspension in these cars always seems to go out. The way it works is the shocks are basicly two hydrolic rams. Anyway alot of the time it's not the shocks but the spheres above them. I don't have them on my car so I'm not really an expert by any means, this website should have all the info you need on them.

Good luck.

Wow, it looks like there's a ton of useful info on that page about the suspension, Thanks. Now on to the ABS/ESP/ASR issues...

Ok, so the local MB dealer diagnosed and replaced the throttle body because the M16 motor was at fault. It runs well now (as it should for a $2k repair), however I still have my rough, saggy rear suspension issues (suspect the accumulators), and the ABS/ESP issue which the dealer claims the ABS pump is at fault.

Has anyone ever had an ABS pump fail on their W140?

It looks like mine was involved in a collision in the front, I also have a non-working passenger side headlight wiper, and both sprayers for the headlight washers don't work.
