which one is quieter, w140 or w220

I currently have 98 S420 and love it very much.
it is very quiet on free way, even quieter than ls400/ls430 I believe.
the main reason may be the double pane classs.

last weekend, I test drive 2004 745li and 2002 s430.
both car handle better than the 98 s420, but I don't feel they are quieter than my 98 S420. but I do believe they both have less road noise.

what is your opinion? anyone has the both car, which one is quiet on freeway when at 80+ mile?

thanks

tao

Hi taoh2,
I have both a 95 s320 and 06 s350 and I also feel that that the w140 is quieter, both around town and on the highway.

The double paned glass is amazing and I really wish that they had kept it for the w220.

The W220 has double glass just not the vaccum in between like the W140. What it will mainly come down to is tyres, different tyres will give different sounds and ride etc a quite tyre may not always be as good for performance as others. IMO the W220 on smooth tarmac with the right tyres is quieter than a W140. But I do think that the W140 is better at absorbing sound from ambient sources (street noise etc).

Hi MBNUT1,

I fell in love with the W140 at the Geneva Car Show when I saw it for the first time. It was the first car with double pane windows and pneumatic door closers !

I love the little details, such as the chrome strip behind the door handle to avoid scratching the paint or the little handle that pops out of the trunk to avoid getting your hands dirty. Not to mention the doors that feel like a vault and the general build quality.
These are just a couple of examples of why I believe it's the last MB truly build for perfection without caring about the cost. Heck, allowing for inflation it was a lot more expensive than the W220 or even the 221 today !

The 220 is a more nimble car but I bought it mainly for the 4matic system. I like how it drives but I doubt it will hold up as well as the old one. They made some improvements after 03. Before, the difference in quality was just appalling. I like having lots of airbags, ESP and Pre-Safe but I can definitively see myself exchangin it for a 221 one day, while I will never sell my 140 !

Sorry for the long post
