Do you have the self leveling system?

Sounds Exactly like a Blown rear Shock Absorber. I had a jag that had the leveling system making the same sound. Fortunately I was able to buy a Kit that converted the Rear hydromaticshocks to be able to use the much less expensive every day shock absorbers. Not sure if such a kit exists for Mercedes. I know the The hydromaticshocks for the W140 are a bit pricey. I would recommend a second opinion. My current rear shock absorbers on my W140 are making the same sound, but this is the result of lowering my car considerably.. I will be replacing them with the heavy-duty Bilstien lowering shock absorbers. My W140 doesn’t have the Hydromatic system.
One other thing is to check, is that the bottom of the rear spring is seated correctly In place. This will cause the same noise but is unusual. Good luck
