how does the 1979 300sd drivetrain compare to the 1987 and later 300d?

The best car I ever owned was a 1979 300SD, I would like the same reliability, but a smaller more modern car. How similar is the 1987+ 300d motor and trans to that of my 79 300sd?

is the 1987 and newer 300d a 400,000 mile car like the earlier diesels?

I noticed that the second generation 300d seems to be a 2.5 litre engine? any problems? was it ever offered in a 3.0 litre?

Any input appreciated.

Anybody with one for sale in CA also drop me a note.

1979 300SD
1979 300SD is th best car I ever owned as well. I have 1987 300DT wwith 140K miles. It has more power (about 145 HP) I set the cruise on 75 and it will climb the mountain to Tahoe in 4th gear without downshifting, and with throttle to spare. But the 79 300SD is better. it is more car, it drives better on the highway.

I think that the 6 cyclinder 87 will go the distance. It does have an Al head. But I am not so sure that this is a problem. I have seen vert few with under 200K miles and several with 300K plus.

There are a couple of variants on the 6 cylinder 3.0 liter engine. One is the infamous 3.5 liter which was a problem. The other is the 5 cyclinder 2.5

I dont know what comes in the 300Ds after 1987. These are rare in California.

I might sell you my '79, which is probably the best 79 300SD avalable for sale in the US, but my wife thinks that the 87 is hers and so I can not sell it.

JMF
