Don't open the rear windows!!!
Both back windows on my 96 S420 broke. The power window regulator MB used in the rear are notorious for poor lifespan according to the guys at my local glass shop. Instead of repairing them, I took off the door panels and propped the windows up with a piece of PCV pipe. Now the rear windows are locked closed as if the child lock is permanently on. I now no longer fear my children opening the window will result in the window never going up. The second window originally broke on a trip home from Disney at a rest area. Do you realize how unbearable driving at high sppeeds with a window open is for 2 hours? Almost as unbearable as driving 50 mph on the FL Tpke with speed limit 70 to avoid the loud noise. Unfortunately the repair to make the window operational again is expensive. My recomendation to all W140 owners with funtional windows:
.NEVER OPEN THE REAR WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!
Thank God the front regulators seem to last

My rear window regulator broke also. Boy you are right, I had to drive 10 hours with rear window down, the air resonation was almost unbearable as well as unbelievable.
I ordered replacement window regulators online for only $65 and 4 rivets. Alldata.com {DIY subscription $24yr} has full detailed instruction on how to replace them. Not to bad. You need a cheap rivet tool.

S500, benzo
well i'll be damned
my back regulator broke on my 95 S500 too, I believe for the second time too, cost was 500 to fix, after that my buddy that owns a detail shop informed me that he could have gotten it done for around 300.00, but damn that is expensive for what it is.Sounds to me like we need to smarten up and see if this was one of those deals where it was recalled and if not get it to be one. Has anyone had to endure the evaporative unit on their wide body mercedes, I hear that is notorius for conking out as well.

Sorry to revisit the thread from so long ago, but I have the same problems as discussed, and was curious how you managed to jam the PVC pipe in to "lock" the windows. Great idea. Elaborate if you can. Thanks.

92 500sel/01 320e wag
The regulator broke in my 92 500sel, MB Palm Beach $218 a few years ago. $100 for regulator, the rest labor. I woulld think only labor would have increased in todays world. It broke while roadside assistane replaced the battery and was re-syncing it. The mechanic got it up and then used a small suction cup on the glass, he claimed they do that or use a small plastic wedge
MY 01 E failed while driving north, I got the window up and used duct tape (courtesy of a Ford dealership) around the perimiter of the glass/frame untill I got to a MB dealer the next day

I have two stick windows that I have to get in and fix, I think the whole thing will have to be reblaced or rebuilt at some time, I just keep the windows up and keep the AC running.
