rear head rests w140

hi having probs with the rear headrests. they pull up manually and drop down electrically. the problem is they are very loose when pulled up and drop back down themselves. anyone have a workshop manual for these ?

The manual headrests are vacuum operated, there is a line from each one to the PSE pump under the rear passenger seat. This is the same pump that provides lock/unlock, pressure for the bolsters, backup rods, and supplementary vacuum for the HVAC. The switch on the dash sends a signal to the pump and opens the port which allows the headrests to drop.
It could be various things. I would start with the hoses from the pump, gently remove the connector, a 7mm wrench, was suggested to lift it up and off.
With no vacuum they should not release.

yeah theres the doors, locks on the car, head rest, trunk ext ext that are operated by the vacuum pump. my s class came with a dead pump so the locks in mine dont lock at all unless you use the key it self. but lucky in your case your pump is still good

yes i can hear the pump running. the switch on the dash pulls the headrests down but they are not very solid when up. they just drop down when you drive along. going to have a go at removing the rear seats and try to work out how it should work

I got so pissed off at mine I removed seat and disabled the locking mech so they cannot lock in the up postion and block my view out the back window.

BTW if you take out the rear seat back bring a friend ! that sucker is heavy!!
