Code P0101

I have a 1996 S320 with 175,000 miles I use for highway travel of about 1000 miles every two to three weeks. Just recently I had my CEL checked and the code read P0101 with a:

Defintion of "Mass or volume Air Flow sensor circuit";

Explantion of "Air duct tube damaged'; and

Probabe Cause of "Large vacuum leak on engine: and "faulty Mass sensor".

What does this mean? Is highway travel in particular advisable before fixing whatever the problem is? You may reply to tannj2@comcast.net if personal discussion is best. Thanks.

Sounds like the lid or tubing exiting the air fliter housing is damaged allowing air to bypass the filter causing the MAF to become dirty, then ruined.

Having that code lit up usually causes the engine to go into limp mode, reducing power/efficiency.

Takes about 10 minutes to R&R the MAF. Part is ~$200 online for most models.
