S500 Coupe
Any comments from owners of the S500 Coupe? I am thinking of buying a used one from the early 90's. I am looking for a comfortable touring car that has some oomph on the highway and is quiet inside. Any problems in particular I should watch out for?

K,
I think you'll be very happy with this car for what you describe - a comfortable quiet cruiser with some power at highway speeds. As you'll find on many of these threads most folks would highly recommend you steer away from early 90's S's and get the latest model you can afford (96 and beyond). These cars are very complex with all the latest MB gadgetry and it takes MB a few years to work out all the glitches.
Good luck!

Thanks
Thanks, Z!
Your car certainly sounds like a honey.
I am refining my search, and will probably lean toward a 98 or 99 CL 500, if I can find one that is not too beat up. There are a number of black 98s and 99s on the market within 250 miles of where I live, but I haven't gone to see them yet because people in this area don't seem to take care of their cars - which shows up most dramatically on black, of course. Ideal might be a smoke silver over parchment (the colors of my recently traded in SL500), but that combo seems rare here for some reason.
Ironically, there is a spectacularly clean 98 smoke silver/parchment on sale on ebay near Seattle, but of course that is almost as far away from me as possible.

I live in Richmond, but bought mine in Houston when I was living down in Dallas. I found most of these cars for sale in either Texas, California or Florida. People just seem to drive nicer cars in those areas than here in the Mid-Atlantic. Good luck finding what you want - it'll be well worth the wait and the effort!

Yes the coupe is definitely a nice car for the highway. It also has room for 4 fairly comfortably. You might have a bit more trouble finding a coupe rather than a sedan because less were produced, but you should be able to find one.
Good luck.

Hey,
We have a black coupe in the family and it is
wonderful. Alot better than the sedan in looks
according to me. The space inside is good, comfortable
for four, and safety is as good as the sedan. It
really turns heads when you drive, because
people see it is big, showing your power, but is
a sporty coupe
. Also the rarity of it helps
your presentation (the guy with the ultra rare
benz coupe). That can be a good and bad thing
though

I have a 95 Black with Parchment coupe and I think you'd like it as much as I do. It is very quiet on high speed and has a lot of highend power for passing. One time I was driving on I-70 in Kansas and decided to pass a convoy of trucks, it sprinted from 70 mph to 135 mph in very little time. The only thing that told me to stop was the tires and the shining spot on top of a little hill which ended up to be cops. I had slow down enough to avoid being stopped. Good luck in your search.

I've got your car. It's everything you said. AND it's for sale! I live near Annapolis. I'll let it go for 23k. It's a black 98 with gray leather. Just had 90k inspection at Herb Gordon MB and they could find nothing wrong. Interested.
