cruise control not working

1994 w140 s320a
cruise control not working
my w140 s320 cruise control just stopped working, any ideas? also need to know the function of the button E & S next to the gear lever

Are you sure it's an E?
Usually there is an W and an S next to the gear lever.
W=winter mode, starts moving from the 2nd gear to help in the snow,
S= sport mode, starts moving from the 1st gear and its not so good for the snow, otherwise its quicker and has more torque.
