Hi all, appreciate if you can share your thoughts on my problem.

I have 99 S320 W140 series with 120K miles and recently have noticed that when I maker a left or right turn, the steering wheel does not want to return to neutral position. I have checked the steering fluid reservoir but level was ok. However the color of the fluid is very dark. I did add just a little to make the level to max possible. I had one mechanic check it and he pointed to steering gear box needing replacement. Questions I have are:
1. Is the problem I have due to steering-gearbox malfunctioning?
2. If I change the steering fluid and filter, could this possibly solve the problem?
3. In your opinion is this a dealer only work or can any mechanic replace the gearbox correctly?

appreciate your thoughts on this issue.

Cheers, Ed

I would change fluid .Change filter if it has one.If that does not work use your independant Mechanic.Dealers are expensive.

Thank you for your reply!

Thank you for the reply!

I changed the ps housing fluid 3-4 times but the problem is not 100% solved. It appear that it made the steering smoother but the steering wheel does not want to return to neutral position on its own. I still have to assist it. The color of the fresh fluid is clear but in a second it turns dark brown. But what causes this, the detergent in the PS fluid similar to engine oil? hummm...

I am still puzzled as to how the steering gear box may have gone bad. no accidents and no major work done around it. I had the steering damper shock (? device similar to a shock absorber that went horizontal in the steering space under the engine) replaced about a year ago and that I think may have placed extra stress on the gear box!?

In any event, I just want to make sure that steering gear box is the culprit of the problem and not start paying for the process of elimination to find the problem. any feedback is appreciated!
