it could be your climate control unit. if you go to benzworld.org and go to the w140 section they have forums on how to do a test on your climate control unit to see the mulfuntion in your system.

THis indicates that your vent flap system is not receiving vacuum (sides and front window vents is the "default" when no vacuum. The problem is a leak somewhere in the system. The vacuum comes from the engine intake vacuum and a PSE Pump (located under back seat in the sedan) and is controlled through vacuum control bars behind the dash and a vacuum block under the front passenger floor... I be you hear some "clicks/clunks" under the dash when changing button settings, but no change in the air flow, right? I am fighting this too. First thing is to check the vacuum reservoir tank, usually inside the front right fender... if the car was in an accident there, it probably broke (mine was when I bought it and I had the exact same issue). There are threads on diagnosing this problem... but hope this helps.
