Unhappy Dashboard Idiot Lights Come on and off

My wifes 1992 300SE (W140) dashboard warning lights blink on and then off intermitently. I mean ALL the lights. Everyone of them. I remember reading once about a wiring harness located in the engine compartment that was to blame for this sort of thing. Anyone have any suggestions for my mechanic and myself?

It's been 9 days since your post, so you may have already fixed the problem, but I suspect that you either have a bad battery and / or a bad alternator. When the alternator is not charging properly, the dash lights will flash.

I have never heard of a bad engine wiring harness cause this problem, but since you have an M104 engine between the years of 1992-1995, you certainly do have a bad wiring harness and it will need replacement at some point. They cost about $400 and require 2.5 to 3 hours to replace.

My old '92 500SL used to do the same thing. The dealership replaced the stalk that contains the turn signal/high beams and the problem did not go away. They ended up putting a new instrument cluster all together to solve the problem. Needless to say, that was plenty of $$ out of my pocket.. don't let them do the same to you!

Yikes! Like how much for an instrument cluster, if you don't mind? The dealer said I may need one because my odometer lights are out, and the cluster may be burnt out. Thanks in advance.

It was near $1K for them to replace the cluster (parts and labor). I hope they give you a better deal!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my problem. Sorry I didn't have a chance to log back into this forum to find out what everyone had to say. I have been out of town for most of the summer and have just now had a chance to check in.

The dash lights are still flashing on and off with even greater regularity (every 3-5 minutes now). Car drives normal. It just looks like Las Vegas has possesed the dash warning lights. (kinda cool)

I'll take it in to my mechanic here soon. Car is not our daily driver so its been just sitting with a trickle charger on it for the past 3 months in our garage. But its time to get it straightened out as I am wanting to sellt he car here shortly.

Thanks to all!
