Question Newbie warranty question

hi all,

Looking at a couple s-class cars. One is a 99 S320 LWB with 30K miles eligible for an extended warranty another is a 97 S420 with 55K miles and a 5/100 extended warranty. My question is, for all those with extended warranties, how much do you still spend on maintenance and repairs? what items have you had to repair/fix that we not under warranty. Also for all those who are familiar with the S320s, whats the consensus of LWB vs SWB? Do cars behave identically or are there noticeable differences. danke!

What kind of warranty are on the two cars?? If they are Starmark (factory extended), while it is true that they are 100k mile warranties, they only extend for one year. If it's an aftermarket warranty, then you have to read the contract on what they will cover and what the deductible is. I think if you have any type of warranty, it should cover most major costs. The things you have to pay for are probably brake pads and tune-up parts. By the way, you can only get Starmark warranty from Mercedes Benz dealers and if the car already has it. You can extend the years on the Starmark warranty for more money.

I have an 5/100 aftermarket warranty that has already about half paid for itself in 6 months. I'd recommend you shop around - the same warrantly can cost $1000's different between issuers. Also suggest you get an "exclusionary" warranty -which means everything except what they specifically exclude is covered. Mine had a pretty short list of exclusions - mostly cosmetic trim parts. My out of pocket costs have only been for the standard regular maintenance so far, but have had about $1000 of warranty covered repairs.

Thanks for your replies. Neither of the two cars are starmarked and it actually turns out that the '97 does not currently have an extended warranty either but the dealer swears that I can pick up a 5 year/100 mile extended warranty through Mercedes for $2K It is a MB dealer. '97 has 55.5K miles, '99 has 31K miles. I guess I am wrong but I always thought that a car needs to be covered under a valid basic warranty in order to purchase extended. any thoughts?

I bought my 98 last fall after it was out of the manufacturer's warranty and had no trouble getting an aftermarket extended warranty. Not sure what MB's policy is for StarMark.

I had a GE Capital extended warrantee 3/75000. It had paid three times the amount for repairs of what I paid for already. Guess it's depending on your luck or your car's luck. I heard other owners never had a big problem so....
