M120 engine dimensions
Hi there,
Am new to the forum and have a huge amount to learn of course, but have just purchased a 1993 S600 with an M120 engine and I was wondering if anyone has dimensions, weights etc of the M120 engine as I've hunted and hunted and I can't find any dimensions anywhere.
Any help is much appreciated.

Oh OK, thanks very much for the reply.
So this forum is more about the general use and options than do it yourself or that kind of stuff then ??
I've never been a MB owner before and it's amazing the different models, combinations and options........ I've always loved that MB seem to be where the trends start...... ie MB will put something on it's higher end cars and within 10 years it's standard on most other mid and entry level cars....

Hey how does that S600 ride I'm thinking about getting one my benz mechanic keeps telling me to stay far away from them but i love them? Also what is an M120 engine never heard of?

It is the 6.0L 48V V12 used in the "600" MBs from the 90's. Wonderful motors. Do not let your mechanic scare you. I have dealt with and owned many with similar running costs to the V8 "500" cars. However, you do not maintain it properly, then you will cry.

We are planning on using an M120 (not mine but have access to another unit if we want it) in a kit car project we are starting.
We have just finished our race car project and so next on the list is a road car for me and I love Mercedes brand but haven't ever really had the opportunity to own one, only borrowed other peoples.
I'd like to base the car on MB running gear where possible.
Some shots of our race car project at a recent show...

Just for the interest of anyone else looking for such information, today we finally reassembled our M120 minus the intake and exhaust manifolds and it weighed in at 239KG or 527lb. That includes alternator, starter motor, aircon pump etc etc, that is obviously minus oil etc.
The factory intake manifold is 17.5KG, but I don't have a weight for the exhaust manifolds, but they are quite heavy so I'd say at least another 15-20KG for those also.....

We had to make our own with a lot of trial and error...... measuring etc etc.
Worked with ACS (Australian Clutch Services) to make a custom setup to mate up to our Mendeola 6 speed sequential. It would be worth you getting in touch with them as the hassle was getting the right PCD's for the bolt pattern and locating pins for the crank, so now they have that on record they could easily pump out a custom flywheel for your needs.......... they are by far the best company I've ever dealt with in all of my car projects...... just awesome guys so can't sing their praises enough.

Wow. Thanks for that quick reply. I am specifically looking for a factory flywheel with the m80 x 8 pcd so I can mod it to fit. What are the M120 flywheel ring gear diameter and tooth count?
Also your pics don't show the crank sensor wheel.

We are leaving the factory flex plate and ring gear in place and the button flywheel and clutch goes on top of that. There are 2 small spacers with the factory setup so we're removing one of those and putting the flywheel in it's place, that way we can use the factory sensors and starter.
I believe the Ford Mustang flywheel is close and can be drilled out to make it fit, but it all seemed a bit clunky for my liking to do that so went down this route so at least we know it's made for the job.
Sorry, but I don't know what the factory flex plate / ring gear tooth count is as I didn't need to know so never looked.

I can cut a flywheel to accept the m120 ring gear, was wanting to know its diameter and tooth count so I know which flywheel to mod. A Toyota 3vz flywheel can be easily modded as it is 8x 78mm pcd but has 120t ring gear.

Pretty sure it's around 150 teeth but not sure on the diameter.
I'll double check tooth count and take some pics for diameter next time I'm at the workshop.

Very cool build. I will keep posted what I find as well. I've done many engine swaps and have always found a way to use off- shelf parts. Sometimes they just need some modding.
I will be mating the M120 to a Z06 torque tube and transaxle which is GM26 spline. I want to drill the flywheel for the factory clutch.

I would have happily used a factory part too but the info about what might or might not fit wasn't there as you're finding and to be honest the purpose made clutch from ACS was cheap relative to what I was expecting so it was a no brainer really rather than trying to find and then modify something else, wasn't worth the mucking around for me.
I'll come back to you once I have some more info.

Again, Thank you. That was a huge help. The 148 tooth and diameter info is nowhere else to be found. To confirm, are those pics of the flexplate and ring gear facing towards trans side?
And is that ring gear/flex plate from a 60-2 crank trigger wheel?
I ask, because the flywheel I'll build will incorporate that factory trigger wheel as we'll Megasquirt the M120 using it.
Again, big thanks. I also have the crank/ flywheel dimensions on hand and will post them.

No that photo is of the back of the flexplate that goes towards the engine.
You can see in the photo below the front side that faces the trans.
We're using a Motec M1 for our ECU but it will be great to watch your progress ....... people seem to be really funny about documenting what they're doing with custom projects so it's great to share info.
