1996 MB S320 DTC trouble

Good morning to all!

A customer of mine has a 96 S320 that has been giving me a fit with an EGR code (P0400) which I have already cleaned out the tubes and replaced the EGR Valve. I traced the vacuum lines as well and did find a few to be brittle so I replaced them too. Is it possible to have a clogged intake where the vacuum line runs to? I am not going to assume to know that much more than that at this point. It (of course) is in for Emissions and Inspection so the problem needs to be fixed and not just a temporary repair.

NOTE: The head gasket does leak quite a bit but I would not figure this would cause a 400 code. The car runs great even with 220k mi. on it.

Also - there is a P1700 code for the Upshift Solenoid Valve. Not related to the 400 code I'm sure, but all the same also needs to be repaired. Any hints on how or what to do with this would be helpful as well.

I am a "newbie" to the MBWorld so be gentle all!!!

THanks - Tom
