As prone to rust as the "lesser" Benzs?

I've read elsewhere on MBWorld that German auto manufacturers were forced to use water based paints on their cars during the 90s because it was more eco friendly. As a result, rust was a common issue on German made cars (particularly Mercedes). Complaints of rust in the W202 forum and W210 forum coincide with this. So my question is: are our W140 S-class sedans just as prone to rust or are our paint jobs and rust prevention measures a cut above?
