92 300SE TRANS QUESTION -- ABOUT TO BUY - 1st Time MB Buyer
Hello guys! I found a 92 MB 300SE on craigslist for $800. It's a beautiful car, and it has bullet proof windows, with 176000 miles, and a few issues. My main issue is this: Seller states the transmission acted "sluggish" to shift, so he changed the filter / pan fluid. Now it seems to rev at about 6000+ at 65MPH. The fluid looks horrible. It's mostly dark grey / black / burnt. I might be willing to take a chance on it. It's possible I can do a complete fluid exchange and problem solved. It's possible he used the wrong fluid.. It's probable the tranny is dead. So, here are some questions I have in order of importance to me. The VIN # is:

1) What fluid does this transmission use?
2) What years / models share transmissions with this car? (3.2L I-6)
3) Oil pressure gauge reads 0... Engine sounds fine.. Possible prob?
That's it for now. I'm not buying it until I know I can find a transmission for it. I've been told the only tranny is in 92-93 300SE.. None others work. I can't find any less than $1200 used. I want to hit salvage / pull a part yards tomorrow, so if you guys can decode my vin (and give me any good details about what the VIN says) I'd be thankful! I can change trans. myself, not that hard, however I want the correct transmission the 1st time.

I'am not learned up on your model transmission,but I'd say if fluid burned replace with same transmission,and change fluid every 40,000 miles with Dealer fluid or mobil one atf every 80,000 miles.Oil pressure sender need replacing.I would v erify pressure before I bought car.$800 for a nice body,and $1200 for a tranny,is not bad for a car that will last longer than these new cars. the transmisssion in the 92,and93 were 4 speeds,they later went to five speeds.
