Research for buying W140 S600

Still own my 2001 E55, but have always admired the earlier S600s. Need to ask for some tips on finding a good example.

Any chronic maintenance issues for S600? What items would typically be scheduled for replacement at 60,000 miles, or 100,000 miles? I saw one for sale recently and I believe they had replaced various front end bits and pieces.

Was 1998 the last year?

1999 was the last model year - I have one. I was told once by someone on this forum that only fourteen 1999 w140 S600s were sold in the US.

they were built in 1998, I assume from my 99 that they are the last over engineered Mercedes left.
So a 98 or 99 would be great to own.One thing for certain if anyone wraps exhaust to eliminate heat,I'd do a v12.I've heard they cook wires

Yes - mine was built mid-1998. I think June.

I was surprised that the VIN indicates a 1999 model year depit the relatively early build.

Where to start? The Italians or the Germans?
1998 was the last production year of the W140. The W220 began late 1998 (to be sold in '99 in Europe). The W220 would not reach the US until 2000, so MB just relabeled some of the 1998 cars as '99s.
