Cylinder Misfire

I went to auto zone to get my check engine light checked. The code reader said:

Cylinder misfire on cylinder 1 and 4
Random misfire

Does anyone know what misfire means? what kind of a problem iam looking at and how much would it cost?

Thanks

"Misfire" is a condition in which the combustion process does not occur as it should. It could be caused my a number of reasons. Fouled spark plugs will not deliver a spark and the fuel/air mixture will not ignite. The ignition timing may also be too early (advanced) or too late (retarded). I wouldn't do much driving with such a condition because, depending on the cause of the problem, you could flood the affected cylinders. Check the spark plugs first.
