Post 1995 S500 (M119) Intake Cam Actuator stuck?

I was checking the overall timing on a recently purchased 95 S500. Put the crank to 45 degrees btdc and I was able to pin the drivers side intake and exhaust cams. On the passenger side I was able to pin the exhaust. The intake cam will not pin. The valves are not crashed so I wonder if the timing actuator is stuck.

I went to a junkyard and found another 5.0l M119 engine and pulled the valve covers and put it to 45 degree's and I was able to pin a 4 cams.

I noticed the notch slot that allows the 20 or so degree's of cam advance on the junk M119 was all the way to the left. On my S500 the notch is to the right. Is there the possibility the cam is stuck in the advance position do to a stuck advance?

This was checked with the engine off and I thought at idle the actuator was retarded. I can take pics if needed.

Any input would be great. It seems to have slight skipping at idle but off idle runs great. The catalytic converter seems to be working overtime at idle as well. Smells like alot of fuel not being used.

Thumbs up Figured it out!

I am just that good! No bragging for real. I am a heavy truck mechanic and deal with clean emission diesels all day long and it covers Mercedes Sprinters with dreaded V-6 swirl valve issues so this was not to bad.

WHAT I FOUND.

Timing chain did in fact jump 2 or so teeth on the intake and exhaust passenger side cam's.

The actuator after the jump cause it to lock in the 22 degree position. After moving the intake cam back to pin it the actuator moved and locked into it for left position.

I then rotated the exhaust cam to pin it as well. All this with the chain tensioner removed.

I unlocked all cams and did 1 full rotation of the crank back to 45 degree's BTDC. It was still off. I made a mistake and left in slack from the crank to the intake cam and that is not correct.

Pulled the tensioner back out and took all the slack out of the crank and intake cam.

I then used the slop in the now removed chain tensioner and put the cams into there correct position. Put it all back together and rotated 1 more time and BINGO.

I am able to pin all 4 cams and the actuator is in its fully closed postion at 0 degrees advance.

The skipping and bad idle are now gone and the converter is happy now with no excessive fuel burning.

Now onto the dreaded ASR malfunction. I get that stupid throttle plate fixed we will be able to turn the ASR and CEL off. Rained all day but very productive at the shop.

The M119 engine is tamed.

Good job! (...i know it was last year event). But how do you verify the serviceability of your timing chain tensioner? Are the pins ( special tools) can be home made? Am trying to work on my S420 W140 1998, hard to turn over engine at the crankshaft pulley, with poly belt and all spark plugs removed.

Thanks

slack in timing chain

I quote.
"I unlocked all cams and did 1 full rotation of the crank back to 45 degree's BTDC. It was still off. I made a mistake and left in slack from the crank to the intake cam and that is not correct.
Pulled the tensioner back out and took all the slack out of the crank and intake cam. "

How did you remove the slack in the chain?
Curious in case I run into this problem.
My car has a rough idle and I am at a lost.
NO vacuum leak did all the ignition goodies and yes harness has been replaced. Im going to check my timing in a week or so.
Any advice silverstreak8?
