My buttons sank in !!

I went out today to my car, and when i tried to press the window button sin the center console, they sank in ! They were pushed down slightly below the center console level (shifting wood console).

I am not sure if this related to the very cold weather we had, or is it a spring issue, because the wood center console seemed to be aligned fine. The buttons are both for the rear windows and they are aligned below where they are supposed to be.. One still operates one window, the other is not.

Anyone experienced something like that, and how to fix it?

Buttons

I dont know if this wil help, there was a bulletin on 91/92 129 series cars that discussed the "frame" holding the switches can come off or the "tabs broken". It discussed the proceedure to drill very shallow holes in the panel and use very short screws to re-attach the "new" holders. They allowed 1.5 hrs warranty time and required two holders and twenty screws.

Same thing happend in my 92 300 SE. I pushed it down a little hard and the switch dropped down. Still operates the window and I haven't done anything about it.

Also the switch for the windo in the right rear door actually fell out, leaving a hole. Had it fixed, Happend again. No one ever sits back there!

Have no idea how to fix it. I suppose removing the wood panel would reveal what holds it in place, or thinks it holds it in place.

The plastic buttons are of very poor quality underneath. Really sad. Mine had sunk in as well. To fix, you have to remove the ashtray with a #15 Torx bit ratchet set (start shaped tip, and L-shaped tool). Then you'll see 2 screws on the bottom to remove the bottom wood panel surrounding the grea shifter. Once removed, press gently on the rear of the wood panel, and then the fron will rise. Life the panel off, and you'll see the buttons exposed. Sometimes they simply pop off the latch that attaches them to the panel. That's what happened in my case. One was broken, so I got it replaced at around 70 USD. Damn dealer did not have part in stock and I waited for a week to get it. MB dealerships are sooo far behind in technology, it took them 30 mins to identify the part and order it. Parts for my Lexus are a breeze to order and obtain. WAKE UP MB!!!. I hope that helps.
Mine is a 1995 S420

buttons sank in

Thanks for the reply...

2 of my buttons sank in, and they are for the rear windows, which i hardly use, thank god.

I managed to somewhat fix one of them, using a butter knife. I snuck it in the gap and wiggled it here and there and one of the buttons managed to rise up to almost the same level as the normal two. The last button, i tried for a while but it wouldnt come up to the same level. It does work though, which is good.

i am not sure if i want to take the ashtray and the wood pannel off and fuss with it, i am afraid i will do more harm then good. Basically my concern with the buttons are cosmetic rather then function.

$70 dollars for a button seems hefty, but its a benz...

I guess thats true what they say about benz dealer service, less organized and less friendly then your local lexus dealer service.

Note to Ghost regarding MB service: If your interested, and willing to drive to Milwaukee, I found an excellent source for service. Black Forest Benz, Micheal McKinney. He does great work, loves MB's, restored several, and seems to know his stuff. He runs an add in the Wisconsin Badger Star. If you don't have that and want his address, phone, etc, email me and I'll look it up for you.
