Headlights turn off while driving...

1996 S500 coupe
Headlights turn off while driving...
I had trouble starting my '96 S500 coupe when I came out of a store yesterday. It sounded like the battery was weak, but the stereo, interior lights, etc. all worked. I tried to reach my mechanic but after a couple minutes I tried again and it started right up, though when I turned my headlights on they stayed off. All the other lights came on, but no headlights. I turned them off, tried again, and they came on, but went off after about 20 seconds. I finally got them to stay on long enough for the short drive home, but when I restarted the car there, the same thing again. Any ideas?
I should say that it's a black '96 S500 coupe that I bought in October 2010, and it has had no problems. It had 145,000 miles then and about 178,000 now, and the heater doesn't work, but it's rarely needed here, the a/c is fine, the central locking is out, but pretty much everything else is fine. I've had no mechanical problems at all. Seriously, none, so I'm just waiting for something major to go. But if it does, I can't complain, it's been an incredible car.
