1994 W140 S500 Exhaust Air Pump

Hit the first serious obstacle during the "after buying" service.

During belt / water pump / thermostat etc. changes and checkups I've also taken out the air pump for a disassembly and checks.

I would like to change the air pumps wheel BEARING - and here's the problem.

Googling so far doesn't show anything above OE and used parts only.

Bearing itself seems unique - no help from catalogues / bearing searches.

Official Merc want's over 400$ for the entire pump which I would like to save as the last option.

Please let me know if anyone has been at that point before. I found some info around this forum that those pumps tend to jam and break the belts. I'm not afraid about the pump as I've taken it apart and took care of it. As I understand the pump works only for a short period of time during cold starts, but the wheel itsself will keep on turning all the time - that's why I'd like to change the bearing. You can see that the grease over there is quite old and sticky, and there is no way to clean it and put in new one without breaking the bearing seals...

I brought two from a bearing shop, it was $30 each. Very easy to replace. Just press it out from the pulley. I know I have a spare one somewhere, but just can't put my finger to it.

Major issues - gearbox lost reverse.

Overall - I've put in lot of workhours so far, but It's really nice work while having this forums backup. There will be work to put in even if the car has low mileage - time does it's work as well. 100% of my problems so far were described in detail here - someone encountered them before.

I'm dealing with cars on daily basis - that's pretty much the best car ever, don't want anything else (even thinking of buying another one for my wife, she loves it as well).

I'm not a specialist on the W140 but imho don't go S600, go S500 - there are some detailed posts on this forum why so - do the search.

I've only posted info on issues, as You asked. It's not an essay of my complete car experience.

I bought the car aware of the fact that I'm buying a car that's nearly 25yo, and despite low mileage it sat down in garage for 8 last years.

That meant I would deal with issues at the beginning. Once repaired it will pay back.

Dealing with used and classic automobiles taught me that that is the way things are.

This particular merc is known for it's legendary reliability and resilience, but You're not buying it new with warranty.

So unless You've got a model that's been in regular use and regular proper maintenance there will be some issues needing attention and time.

The S500 is a great car, but the age of the W140 will create problems. I haven't had major issues (trans, motor), but depending on the prior owners care you can buy a money pit. Get a PPI and budget for items identified and you'll be content.
