140 Instrument Cluster
Tried to take out the instrument cluster on my 1997 S500 and found the left side of the cluster to be very very tight, could not pull it out, was afraid to break it and gave up. Still have three items without light at night. Used the right tool I think. What gives?

be careful when removing the instrument cluster. The instrument cluster may break, if the extraction hooks looses grip and slides off.
The instrument cluster is hold in place by four springs and four rubber parts. The rubber parts tend to hold the cluster firmly in place.
If you could move it on the right side, the try to move the whole thing with just your fingers. A guy from Germany wrote, that he got the cluster removed, by only using his fingers. He advised us to get a grip at the top of the cluster first, because the instrument panel is more flexible over there. Then try to shift it back and forth until it comes out.
If you want to use the hooks, then use those with mercedes number W140589023300.

speaker grill
greetings,
I was told by my benz mech. that if you remove the left hand speaker and grill ,it gives you a better shot at the left hand rear of the instrument panel for leverage to help push it out 'good luck in your endevor.

The hooks if properly used will get it out, but the push from behind method worked for me, in addition to the tools

The only comment is dont raise the speaker grill too far, MB has snaps at the back. I found mine broken, probably from the AC work, a little double sided fixed it.
