No Dot 5! It's a silicone. Mercedes have what they call Dot 4 Plus which is what I use. However, any Dot 4 brake fluid should do.

Oops, I didn't know that Dot 5.1 was a non-silicone brake fluid. It's a synthetic that's compatible with Dot 3 and Dot 4 and is supposed to be long life and have a lower viscosity than Dot 3 and 4 which is claimed to work better in the micro valves of ABS braking systems.
It looks like using it would be like changing to a synthetic motor oil, i.e. the same kind of benefits.
I wonder what Mercedes use in the new SBC braking systems.

NO NO NO!!!! DONT USE DOT 5! Thats for show/restored/vintage cars, its a non abbrassive/corrosive formula. It holds water in it and should not be used on any car other then specified. Use dot 4- I would recommend ATE Super Blue

I thought the same thing but DOT 5.1 isn't just a version of DOT 5.0.
5.1 is a synthetic brake fluid that's fully compatible with DOT 3.0 and 4.0. It's not silicone.
It apparently has a lower viscosity than the other DOT fluids which makes it work better with ABS brake systems.
Even so, the DOT 4 Plus that Mercedes dealers sell has worked just fine in my ABS-equiped 300E.
