Had mine done a month ago, I watched them do it, not very easy for the nonprofessional. The connector line nozzle to the shock absorber, if damaged, would require half of the car to be dismantled in order to replace that hose coming from the reservoir to the shock absorber/wheel area, which runs inside the car, under the seats, etc etc. Not worth risking all that to save a couple of hunder dollars.

Shocks

The 500 has a hydraulic suspension system, oil from an engine mounted pump is fed to accumulators which are gas filled diaphrams. These are linked to the hydraulic struts, typically the accumulators fail, the shocks fail late in life and are $450 ea. The accumulators are a $100 ea, signs are a rough or sometimes a bouncy ride with no signs of leakage. The accums are just messy since they are filled with oil under pressure, the struts are similar to shocks, take out the trunk liner the mountings are there.
