Pesky problem which I cant seem to sort

Hi guys.
I have a 1995 S500 which seems to have a fuelling problem. A few months back it was diagnosed as having an issue with the distributor caps which I replaced and the car ran perfectly. Now the car seems to be running very rich and has a very strong fuel smell. When driven it lacks power massively. Some say its the air flow meter. The car starts, revs freely in neutral but will not pull anywhere near the way it should. There is a lot of smoke (not oil) when at idle. I have it booked in for some more diagnostics but they cant fit me in for about 3 weeks. I was just wondering what peoples thoughts were to be honest. I love this car but my patience is wearing thin with it now.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance
